<image:title>Education Research - What role do math anxiety, sense of belonging, metacognition, self-efficacy, and growth mindset play in perpetuating barriers to entry into STEM careers?</image:title>
<image:caption>We want to understand if introductory science courses for non-majors help students master real world numerical skills. We also ask what role do math anxiety, sense of belonging, metacognition, self-efficacy, and growth mindset play in perpetuating barriers to entry into STEM careers? And how can research experiences for undergraduates effectively prepare students to be healthy, collaborative, ethical, and innovative professionals?</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Congratulations to 2024 Follette Lab Seniors! - Bethany Martin ‘24</image:title>
<image:caption>Bethany definitely gets the “best sport” of the thesis cohort award. She was originally supposed to be able to work on hot-off-the-presses Hubble Space Telescope observations of the planetary mass companion Delorme 1 (AB)b, but in a run of crazy bad luck, Hubble went briefly into safe mode right as our observations were scheduled to be taken last summer and they got bumped from July to August to October to January to June. Poor Bethany was strung along for the ride, but she rose to the occasion and did excellent preparatory work for that golden day when we eventually get those mythical data.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Congratulations to 2024 Follette Lab Seniors! - Courtney Reed ‘24</image:title>
<image:caption>In her thesis, Courtney built upon the work of AY22-23 postbac Catherine Sarosi and made major improvements and advancements in one of our long-term lab projects - to construct a tool that will systematically analyze and compare the structures and morphologies of planet-forming disks across wavelengths. Courtney taught herself to work with a particularly tricky subset of radio interferometry data of these disks.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Congratulations to 2024 Follette Lab Seniors! - Giselle Hoermann ‘24 (UMass)</image:title>
<image:caption>Giselle’s thesis was all about high-contrast imaging. Building off of the work of lab alumni Alex Watson ‘18, Clare Leonard ‘19 and Jéa Adams Redai ‘21, Giselle extended our PyKLIP Parameter Explorer (PyKLIP-PE) algorithm to work with multiwavelength spectral differential imaging data and applied it to a subset of the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey (GPIES) dataset. It’s early days for this project, but Giselle’s initial results are super promising, and we now have the foundation that we need to apply the optimization methods that we developed for protoplanet detection with Magellan to the adolescent planets that GPIES sought.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Congratulations to 2024 Follette Lab Seniors! - Alex Del Franco ‘24</image:title>
<image:caption>Alex’s innovative and ambitious thesis set out to develop and test a framework for interactive explanatory text and lab exercises to accompany an introductory astrophysics course. Alex spent a whole semester developing, adapting, and piloting various modalities, topics, and degrees of interactivity with real students in the classroom. He then developed a hypothesis around the role of scaffolding and interactivity in improving student learning and tested it with a series of focus groups. He taught himself to code and analyze qualitative transcript data, which suggested a nuanced interplay between scaffolding and interactivity. In other words, there are distinct advantages and disadvantages to each modality. Alex and I hope to continue to develop these activities and deliver them as a packaged curriculum someday.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Congratulations to 2024 Follette Lab Seniors! - Adrian Friedman ‘24</image:title>
<image:caption>In work that he began initially as a summer intern with lab postdoctoral alum Connor Robinson (now at Alfred University), Adrian built, installed, and commissioned a fiber-fed spectrometer for our campus observatory. Through many coooooold trials and tribulations on the roof of the science center, Adrian honed his instrumentation, engineering, and software skills (and patience). In the end, he was able to create a functioning prototype that we will be able to integrate into our stellar astrophysics and upper level observational astronomy courses.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Congratulations to 2023 Follette Lab Seniors! - Cailin Plunkett ‘23</image:title>
<image:caption>In Cailin’s thesis, which won the Five College Astronomy Department’s Mary Daly Irvine prize, she developed and implemented a new method for estimating underlying populations of protoplanets from high-contrast imaging contrast curves and detection statistics. She was even able to boil down her highly technical thesis into a three minute presentation for the Amherst College Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, where she received the “audience choice” award among the 10 finalists. <image:title>News - Congratulations to 2023 Follette Lab Seniors! - Alyssa Cordero ‘23</image:title>
<image:caption>Alyssa’s thesis involved improving predictions for the detectability of accretion features in NIR spectra of accreting brown dwarfs with Alyssa taught herself to use the JWST ETC and made key improvements to a JWST Cycle 2 proposal last fall. Although that proposal was not accepted, Alyssa’s thesis results will be highlighted in our Cycle 3 resubmission., and we think it will have a really good shot this time around! <image:caption>Cailin Plunkett, a junior physics and math major at Amherst College, was one of the 417 students nationwide to receive the Goldwater Scholarship. When she was interviewed for an Amherst news article about this year’s scholarship winners, she discussed both her work here in the Follette Lab and her time researching at LIGO in the summer of 2021. In our lab, her work focused on understanding the formation mechanisms of planets and how these differ from those of stars. Her time at LIGO was spent working with noise models that would enable the isolation of gravitational wave signals from black holes. Congratulations Cailin!</image:caption>

<image:caption>High-resolution imagery of planet-forming disks has revealed the presence of a variety of morphological features, including rings, spirals, arcs, and shadows. In order to develop a quantitative picture of morphology in the population of resolved planet-forming disks, we need to study a large sample of high resolution imagery in multiple wavelengths. We present a large database of resolved planet-forming disks, combining literature stellar and disk properties with archival imagery from ALMA, SPHERE, SEEDS, and GPI</image:caption>

<image:caption>We developed the Flexible Image Gallery Generator (FIGG) Python package to provide a powerful processing tool for constructing image grids through a straightforward user interface. FIGG allows for a user to crop, normalize, mask, label, and display a set of .fits format science images using a simple Google Sheets interface. We utilized FIGG to examine a set of newly-compiled near-infrared images of transitional disks from an international collaboration between the VLT-SPHERE, GPI, and Subaru teams. Applying FIGG to this image set, we were able to visualize and compare substructures within the population despite the large variation in spatial and flux scales across spectral types, distances, and instruments.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In this chapter of the Protostars and Planets VII, we review the breakthrough progress that has been made in the field of high-resolution, high-contrast optical and near-infrared imaging of planet-forming disks. These advancements include the direct detection of protoplanets embedded in some disks, and derived limits on planetary masses in others. Morphological substructures, including: rings, spirals, arcs, and shadows, are seen in all imaged infrared-bright disks to date, and are ubiquitous across spectral types.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Accreting Object Spectra - Probing the Formation Mechanisms of Brown Dwarfs and Planetary-Mass Objects using Keck/LRIS</image:title>
<image:caption>Measuring accurate accretion rates of stellar and substellar objects allows us to probe their fundamental formation pathways. Previous studies of excess continuum and line emission have enabled accretion comparisons across mass regimes, ranging from stellar-mass T Tauri stars to substellar objects. However, any astrophysical differences in accretion between these objects remain unclear. Thus, we present a two-year study using the Keck Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) in order to expand the sample of substellar objects from Herczeg et al. (2008) into a lower-mass regime.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Delorme 1 (AB)b, a ~30-45 Myr circumbinary planetary-mass companion, was recently discovered to exhibit strong Hα emission. This suggests ongoing accretion from a circumplanetary disk, somewhat surprising given canonical gas disk dispersal timescales of 5-10 Myr. Here, we present the first NIR detection of accretion from the companion in Paβ, Paγ, and Brγ emission lines from SOAR/TripleSpec 4.1, confirming and further informing its accreting nature</image:caption>

<image:caption>In this work, we present a new, systematic approach to optimization vetted using data of the high-contrast stellar companion HD 142527 B from the Magellan Adaptive Optics Giant Accreting Protoplanet Survey (GAPlanetS). More specifically, we present a grid search technique designed to explore three influential parameters of the PSF subtraction algorithm pyKLIP: annuli, movement, and KL modes. We consider multiple metrics for postprocessed image quality in order to optimally recover at Hα (656 nm) synthetic planets injected into contemporaneous continuum (643 nm) images.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We report H-alpha differential imaging results from the deepest and most comprehensive accreting protoplanet survey to date, acquired with the Magellan Adaptive Optics (MagAO) system's VisAO camera. We detect one new candidate protoplanet, CS Cha "c", robustly recover the HD142527 B and HD100453 B low mass stellar companions across multiple epochs, recover LkCa 15 b (though cannot rule out a substantial scattered light contribution to its emission), recover PDS 70 c, and tentatively recover PDS 70 b when employing targeted optimization. Of the many other previously-reported companions and companion candidates around objects in the sample, we do not recover any additional robust candidates.</image:caption>
